 Getting Initiated into Palo Mayombe

There are several purposes of going through a Palo Mayombe initiation in order to be worthy of the title Palero. The first purpose is affirmed from the spirits if the prospective member is mentally and spiritually ready to walk the Path of Palo Mayombe. It is not enough to be ready or willing.

A new member approved by the spirits for Palo Mayombe initiation is already on the right path. Initiation into Palo Mayombe is to spiritually awaken the member. It is a fact that many people even in the dogmatic practices like Christianity and the rest are spiritually dead. The blindfolding and ritual practices are to make the initiated dead or less sensitive in the body but alive and more connected with the spirit. It is a ritual that involves body scratching, known as rayamiento.

Nganga

Initiation and other rituals are handled by the elder of the house performing the initiation. The elder is a spiritually experienced Palero and is caretaker of the Nganga. Nganga is the pot where rayamiento and other rituals occur. The power and spirits of Nganga must be used with caution, as they are extremely powerful. Nganga is where all the spiritual natural materials go into.
